Good Pair of Walking Shoes
One of the great things about walking is that you don’t need a lot of equipment. But if you are going to do a lot of walking, consider investing in a good pair of shoes specifically designed for walking.
Wearing shoes that don't fit or don't properly support your feet can result blisters, sore feet, or an injury, which can be very discouraging as your fitness plans get put on hold.
Where to Buy a Good Walking Shoe
If you want to buy a good walking shoe, it is best to seek the advice of an expert. Visit a store with qualified, knowledgeable staff that can assist you in selecting the right shoe for your feet.
Tips for a Proper Fit
- A good fit is much more important than the colour and style or how trendy the shoe is.
- Be sure to “test drive” the shoes by walking around the store.
- Bring an old pair of shoes with you, so the staff member can assess the wear pattern of your shoe.
- Don't buy shoes that feel too tight and expect them to stretch to fit.
- Feet tend to swell during the day, so it’s best to purchase your shoes at the end of the day.
- Get your feet measured every time you buy a new pair of shoes. The size of your feet will change as you get older.
- If you normally wear an orthotic, be sure to wear it when trying on shoes.
- Make sure the ball of your foot fits comfortably into the widest part of the shoe.
- Most of us have one foot that is larger than the other, so fit your shoe to your larger foot. Adjustments can be made to your footwear to help fit the smaller foot.
- Shoes should be comfortable in the store. Do not buy shoes with the hopes that some day they will be comfortable enough to wear.
- Stand while the shoe is being fitted to make sure there is enough space (3/8" to 1/2") between your longest toe and the end of the shoe (approximately a thumb’s width).
- Take your time. Try on many different types and styles of shoes.
- The best shoe for you is the one that fits you best and offers the best support, flexibility and cushioning.
- When shopping for a shoe, be sure to wear the same type of socks you would wear while walking.
- Your heel should fit comfortably in the shoe with a minimum amount of slipping - the shoes should not ride up and down on your heel when you walk.
